The names of the robbery suspects that were given to me by beat-section staff were all youths aged 16 or less. No photographs or fingerprints were held for any of them. I was starting with a blank canvas.

I was given an assistant, Constable Brook, to help me with my enquiries. We devised a plan that was very simple: together we approached the parents of the nominated suspects and simply asked them for their assistance and offered them ours. Our aim, we advised, was to prevent their kids from associating with troubled youths who were leading their children astray. If things went to plan we could keep their kids out of the courts and jail or even worse, from killing someone during one of the robberies. Every parent was happy to assist. The parents allowed us to photograph their kids and agreed to call police when they ran away from home or left without permission. They also agreed that police should ring them whenever their kids were found in the city associating with undesirables. The parents came into town and picked their kids up. In effect the parents worked with us to prevent crimes from being committed.

After interviewing all of the nominated suspects and their friends and following up all leads, Constable Brook and I managed to solve 29 of the previously unsolved robberies. That was 29 happy victims and one or two happier bosses.
